Truth truly is stranger than Ficton.....
Five us purchased a J-3 Cub, Feb. 16, 1946, NC 42747.  I was a mature 16 year old!  I loved that Cub but, against my wishes (who pays any attention to a teen-ager?), it was decided to sell it to West Side Airport and buy faster plane.
I rented the plane occasionally just to joy-ride but time, marriage, family, etc., caused me to lose track of it.  During the summer of 1987, I was in a hospital waiting room and leafing through the February 1987 issue of "Plane & Pilot" when I saw this photo.  No information was given about the plane but when I turned it around, I saw the numbers

Harold Barnes and Paul Payne were co-managers of the first Marion Air-Field.  Payne left after a few days (1928) but Barnes served in several capacities through-out the field's history.  He was one of the founder's of the Marion Aero Club and played a prominent and active roll even though often absent due to his career as an American Airlines pilot.

The lady is Frances Stephens, mother of Burr Stephens, Anderson IN., to whom we are indebted for this valuable 1938 photo.
